ü Major functions of digestive system To break down food and make it into energy and removes liquids and excreats wastes through the rectum
ü Describe how the structure of a cell in your small intestines provides an advantage on its function. (microvilli)
ü Explain the major parts - mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, and large intestine - and list the function(s) of each.
1. The mouth contains teeth which grinds up the food, it also contains salivary amylase which breaks down starches into simple sugars. 2. The esophagus is a tube which connects the mouth and the stomach. 3. The stomach is where the the food is further broken down so that it can be absorbed intothe body. 2. the small intestine is where the food is absorbed into the body3. The liver creates several chemicals which help break down food. 4. The pancreas creates chemicals which help break down food, it also creates insulin which helps sugar get absorbed into cells. 5 The large intestine is where the water is taken out of the food.
ü Describe the path food travels throughout the digestive system. Include a diagram that follows the passage of food through the digestive system. The food starts in the mouth and is broken down by enzymes in the mouth and then travels down the pharynx then down to the esophagus where it travels to the stomach where it is broken down by gastrick juices then put into the duodinumthen the food is passed to the small intestine where nutrients are asorbed then the food is pushed into the large intestine where water, electrulites, and salts are asorbed then the wasted is pushed into the rectum and released as fecies.
o Where is the food broken down (name all organs involved in this process)? Mouth, Esophogas, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine. o Where is the food absorbed? State the specific places where carbs, proteins and lipids are digested and absorbed. Describe the process of how this happens. In the stomach digestive enzymes break down proteins. Carbs broken down by saliva and absorbed in small intestine. The same happens with fats. They are absorbed by villi in the small intestine. They are like little hands that scoop carbs proteins and lipids up and send them into the blood stream.
ü What is gas? Where does it come from? gas is CO2, methane, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen. it comes from, gas ccomes from food being digested in the intestines, some gas comes from swallowing air while eating ü What is GERD? Why does it happen? Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease,It happenes when the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle between the esophagus and the stomach) the lower esophageal sphincter) is weak or relaxes when it shouldn’t ü What is insulin? Where is it produced? What is it used for? What can a lack of insulin cause? a hormone that has great effect on matabolism and other body functions, pancreas, to reduce the amount of glucose i the bloodstream, type 2 diabetes. ü Find 4 fun/interesting facts about your body system. You may list the facts as sentences or use them to create trivia questions. 1) People make 1 to 3 pints of saliva a day. 2) An adult stomach can hold aproximately 1.5 liters of material. 3) The average male will eat about 50 tons of food during his lifetime in order to sustain a weight of 150 pounds. 4) After you eat, it takes usually between 24 and 72 hours in healthy adults for the complete process of digestion to occur. ü Develop 10 multiple choice questions and put them in your wiki so that your peers can answer them after you go over your body system.
1. What does the pancreas creat that helps cells absorb sugar? 2. What in the mouth breaks down starch? 3. What is absorbed by the large intestine? 4. How much can and adult stomach hold? 5. Where are fats absorbed? 6. How long can digestion take? 7.What does GERD Mean? 8 What kind of gases are in gas? 9. What is done to break up food in the mouth? 10. Where do the villi move carbs and proteins? ü Explain how your system might be involved, or not involved in the driver’s injury. Cite specific evidence. The digestive system might be involved in the drivers injury because we know that the driver is bleeding out of the anus which is the end of the digestive system. This means that somewhere in the digestive system something was punctured by the pole to cause blood to get into the digestive system
